the triumphant return "Did you know," she asks you, "that the sun tastes like lemon squares?" There is lemon extract on her fingers, and you can feel the citrus tang stinging and seeping into your own cuticles, feel it shrinking your salivary glands and squeezing out your tastebuds.

"What makes you say that?" you ask lightly, as the sharp burn singes the hair of your nostrils and creeps in to flood the tear ducts hiding at the corners of your eyes.

"Because it does, of course," she answers, and places three fingers of her right hand just below your hairline, just where the lemon-extract sweat is beginning to seep from your pores, drawing the sting from your face
anticipation Life waits inside us with held breaths and clutching expectant fingers.
It is the emptiness of the coffee carafe at 4:59 a.m.
And the open grasping hands of a small child at Easter.
Life is the air that fills your lungs and your nose and links scents directly into your memory, vivid:
Your mother's Elizabeth Arden face powder, scattered across her bathroom counter from your dressup games,
The indefinable scent of a hundred people pressed close together and the lack of smell as they hold their breaths til the first chord is struck,
The paint chips and old metal of the top of a roller coaster,
And the hot pavement-warmed air shoving itsel

full title: the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

So remember how I said I was in photography now and you'd be likely to see some more photo stuff as I went along? Here's the first of that. My first print, and I'm pretty proud of it. Except the scan shows some flaws that don't show up when you're actually holding the picture in front of you.

Models are the lovely ~Flamintwilight and =livingcomforteagle, Ellen and LeeAnn respectively, two of my good friends who are more than willing to hold hands on command. The problem comes in laying on the cold ground, but eventually I convinced them to do that too. They're really good sports. (Ellen is pictured on the left, if you're wondering, and LeeAnn on the right, since there aren't really many identifying features if you don't know them personally.)

Oh, and by the by: I could totally stand to live in the darkroom. I may have mentioned before that really I like the actual process of photography better than the results, and I still stand by that.

this is really beautiful. The quality of the photograph itself reminds me of an era long since past, like the 1960's or 1970's. There's a really raw, loving quality, even in just the motion of clasping one another's hands. There's fear, and reassurance, hope, and yet a sense of detachment or loss I find completely heart-wrenching. This is a really neat photograph. or maybe I'm just weird, sorry for rambling. I truly love this. You're very, very talented.

Babygirl is doing better, if that makes you feel any better. Grounded right now til Sunday noon, and sort of distracted by RL from dA, but she's doing better.

The quality of the photograph is more due to my status as a poor student than to any real artistic decision, but I'm glad it works for you. I can see where you're getting all the emotions from, though I didn't plan them initially - the way they're grasping hands but there still appears to be all that space between them, the way it looks like one of them has to reach farther than the other. (That has more to do with the angling of the camera, the angling of their bodies, and the part where Ellen had a coat on and LeeAnn didn't, but I can definitely see it.) I'm glad you like it!

you're more patient than me... the process is what kills me. i'm all for instant gratification lol

Instant gratification is great! I'm normally all for it, but I dunno. I just love the whole 'chemicals/darkroom/negatives/printing' experience a whole lot.

Thanks! I thought I was finished, actually, but I did a better one today, and when I get two seconds, I'll probably upload an improved version.
